springboard for children

Springboard for Children is a registered charity which provides a literacy lifeline for children with learning difficulties in inner city primary schools.

We work in partnership with primary schools and specialise in giving the gift of reading and writing to children who find learning difficult for various reasons.

We are committed to working with all children who need literacy support, whatever their background, race or creed.

A team of specialist teachers and trained volunteers offers one-to-one literacy teaching, to help children realise their full potential.

We currently work in schools across London and Manchester. In London our focus is in the boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Westminster and Islington although we are keen to expand. In 2009 / 2010 we provided 315 places across 12 schools; in total we worked with 386 children during the year.

Information to parents:

The educational, social and economic environment is changing more quickly than ever. We are committed to increasing our efforts to respond swiftly and effectively to meet the needs of the individual children, schools and families with whom we work. During the past term we have continued to pursue our 'whole child' and 'whole school' approach for combating literacy failure and continue to build on the excellent work of our dedicated school-based literacy centres. We are now able to offer high quality training sessions to support literacy provision and phonics for support staff, teachers and workshops for families.  As we work very closely with schools, all our training sessions have follow up monitoring visits included in our competitive rates.  We also offer diagnostic testing for individual children and year groups including Phonological Awareness Assessments, Early Reading Assessments and Full Literacy Assessments. If you would like to find out more please contact Julie Milnthorpe or Carolyn Clarke on 020 7921 4552 or email juliemilnthorpe@springboard.org.uk / carolynclarke@springboard.or.uk.
